What is UHMWPE? The material behind soft body armour

What is UHMWPE soft body armour — R Supply Store guide

If you have shopped for soft body armour you will have seen the term UHMWPE. It stands for ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, and it is one of the two materials behind most modern soft armour. Here is what it is and why it matters.

What is UHMWPE?

UHMWPE is an extremely long-chain polyethylene spun into fibres that are, weight for weight, very strong. Layered into panels, it is designed to catch and slow projectiles by spreading their energy across the material.

Why it is used in armour

  • Light. UHMWPE is notably lighter than many alternatives, which matters over a long shift.
  • Water-resistant. The fibre does not absorb water the way some materials do.
  • Flexible in soft form. It suits concealable vests, caps and panels.

Our UHMWPE helmets, panels and covert caps use this material.

UHMWPE vs aramid

Aramid, often known by brand names, is the other common soft-armour fibre. Both can be manufacturer-stated to similar protection levels such as NIJ IIIA; the practical differences come down to weight, flexibility, thickness and how each handles heat and moisture. We stock both so you can choose by fit and preference.

Hard vs soft

UHMWPE also appears in rigid hard plates for higher threat levels. For the difference, see soft vs hard armour.

R Supply Store supplies protective equipment with manufacturer-stated ratings that are not independently verified by us. Nothing here is bulletproof against every threat, and this article is general information, not legal advice. Civilian ownership of body armour is legal in England, Wales and Scotland; buyers are responsible for confirming ownership and import legality for their location.
